Staff Spotlight: Sandra Bailey

Mrs. Sandra Stuart Bailey joined CBE in 1998, making her the longest-serving staff member currently on the administrative team. As the student services specialist, Sandra manages the graduate program, including recruitment, with Dr. Saad Khan and provides support to department programs such as the Future Leaders in Chemical Engineering.

“Sandra is the glue to our graduate program” Dr. Khan said recently. “Her constant care for all our students together with her passion to help recruit and nurture the best students remain unparalleled.”

Gilbert Castillo, who earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from NC State, agrees. At the Fall Reception on the Oval, Gilbert and Sandra met for the first time since Gilbert graduated 5 years ago. After they shared a big hug, Gilbert explained “Sandra was always there during my graduate career. She was invaluable in navigating grad school from recruitment weekend all the way to graduation.” Gilbert is now a senior scientist and engineer at LORD, an industrial partner of the CBE department.

Sandra has been an essential member of the chemical engineering program for 35 years. She received the Award for Excellence in 2006, as well as the Pride of the Wolfpack Award. A Fuquay-Varina native, Sandra graduated from Campbell University before joining NC State. She and her husband have four fur babies: Sasha, Prince, Brownie and Roxie. They enjoy visiting the beach, watching movies on a rainy day and dancing a two-step together.
