Adam Melvin (Ph.D. ‘10), an assistant professor at LSU, has earned a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award. The NSF views the CAREER award as among its ” … most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.”

Koohee Han (Ph.D. ’18, advised by Prof. Orlin Velev) was selected to receive the 2018 James K. Ferrell Outstanding Ph.D. Graduate Award. Dr. Han will receive the Award at the Department’s Graduation Ceremony on Friday, May 10. Dr. He is currently a Postdoctoral Appointee at the Argonne National Laboratory.
Yiming Wang (Ph.D. ’18, advised by Prof. Carol Hall) was the Runner-up recipient. Dr. Wang is a CBE Postdoctoral Researcher.
The Ferrell Award recognizes an outstanding Ph.D. graduate from our program who distinguishes him/herself in
- Scholarship: publications, research-based honors, presentations; and
- Service: teaching/TA performance, graduate student recruiting, GSA service, mentorship of peers and undergraduate researchers.
Dr. Ferrell was the first Ph.D. graduate from the department’s chemical engineering program. He later became a faculty member and was Department Head from 1966 through 1980.
Mr. Vasudev Haribal received the first-place award in the Engineering category at the NCSU 14th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium. Vasudev received the award for his poster “Light Alkane Valorization to Ethylene via Chemical Looping,” co-authored with Drs. Luke M. Neal and and Fanxing Li, and graduate student Seif Yusuf.
Vasudev’s previous awards include First Place (tie) for Best Formal Presentation at the 2019 Schoenborn Graduate Research Symposium and two poster awards at the 2018 AIChE Annual Meeting. He was also the second runner-up for the Best Student Paper at the 43rd Clearwater Clean Energy Conference in Clearwater, Florida in 2018.
