Congratulations to Professors Bob Kelly, Fanxing Li, and Milad Abolhasani!

Professors Bob Kelly and Fanxing Li were reappointed as Alcoa Professors, and Professor Milad Abolhasani was newly appointed as an Alcoa Scholar.

Alcoa Professors and Scholars are appointed by the Dean of Engineering. Nominees must be “full-time tenured associate professors or professors who have distinguished themselves in teaching, research, or extension.”

Professor Kelly obtained his B.S. and M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Virginia and earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from our department in 1981. 

Aside from serving as an Alcoa Professor, Prof. Kelly is also the Founder and Director of NC State’s Biotechnology Program. His other honors include the College of Engineering’s 2022-23 George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award, the American Chemical Society’s Marvin Johnson Award in Biochemical Technology (2004); the AIChE Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Award (2007); the American Society for Microbiology DuPont Biosciences Award (2018) and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Extremophiles (2018). Prof. Kelly is also an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Professor Li received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemical engineering from Tsinghua University and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from The Ohio State University. In 2018, Prof. Li was selected as an “Early Riser” by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). He has also received the SABIC Young Professional Award given by the AIChE Particle Technology Forum, an NCSU Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award, and a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. 

Professor Abolhasani received his B.S. and M.A.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology and the University of British Columbia, respectively. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto and was a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT. 

Prof. Abolhasani recently received the Alcoa Engineering Research Achievement Award for his significant research contributions. His other awards and fellowships include the AIChE Nanoscale Science & Engineering Forum Young Investigator Award, the Dreyfus Foundation Award for Machine Learning in Chemical Sciences & Engineering, and the Goodnight Early Career Innovator Award.
