Dr. Carbonell and Senior Chris Cooper Paint the Belltower Red
The University illuminates the Memorial Belltower in red to celebrate special occasions and noteworthy accomplishments of NC State faculty, staff, and students. Two members of the CBE community have earned that honor……..
On Tuesday, March 14, Professor Ruben Carbonell was recognized for his induction into the National Academy of Inventors — one of three NC State faculty members receiving this honor; and on Saturday, March 18, chemical engineering and economics graduating senior, Christopher Cooper, was honored for receiving a Churchill Scholarship.
Dr. Carbonell is the Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He’s a Fellow of the the AIChE, and the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. His awards at NC State include the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence, the highest award given to university faculty.
He’s also the initial Chief Technology Officer for the newly-funded National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals (NIIMBL), and in his spare time he’s the director of both The William R. Kenan, Jr. Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science, and the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC).
Chris is NC State’s second Churchill Scholarship recipient and is one of 15 recipients of the award this year. Approximately 100 U.S. institutions are invited to nominate up to two applicants for the Churchill Scholarship.
He’s a Park Scholar, a Benjamin Franklin Scholar, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi academic honor societies, and is one of NC State’s two 2016 Goldwater Scholarship recipients. He also helped raise over $200,000 for the Krispy Kreme Challenge, and has spent time studying chemical engineering in France and sustainable systems in New Zealand.
Congratulations to Professor Carbonell and Chris Cooper for making Raleigh see Red!
