Honoring the 2020 CBE Distinguished Alumni

On December 4, 2020, the department hosted a virtual ceremony to honor four of our graduates with CBE Distinguished Alumni Awards and one graduate with the CBE Distinguished Young Alumni Award. The ceremony program is available here. A YouTube video of the ceremony is available for viewing here.

Established in 2016, the Awards are intended to celebrate and recognize the exemplary contributions recipients have made to their profession, their community, and our department, college or university. All graduates of the department, including deceased graduates, are eligible for consideration.

DARYL L. CAUDLE

Vice Admiral Daryl Caudle — Vice Admiral Daryl L. Caudle

Daryl Caudle, a native of Winston-Salem, graduated from NC State in 1985 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy after attending Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Since leaving NC State he has earned several degrees: an M.S. in Physics from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1992, an M.S. in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University in 2004 and a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2010.

Earlier in his career Caudle held multiple officer positions including Division Officer of the USS George Washington Carver, Engineer Officer of the USS Stonewall Jackson, Engineer Officer of the USS Sand Lance, Executive Officer of the USS Montpelier, Officer in Charge of the Nuclear Prototype Training Unit, Commanding Officer of the USS Jefferson City, Commanding Officer of the USS Topeka, Deputy Commander of Submarine Squadron 11 and Commanding Officer of the USS Helena. In 2007, he was named Assistant Deputy Director for Information and Cyberspace Policy for the Joint Staff.

Caudle was named Commander of Submarine Squadron 3 (2009), Chief of Staff for Commander Submarine Force (2011), Deputy Chief for Security Cooperation (2013), Deputy Commander for JFCC – Global Strike (2014), Deputy Commander for the U.S. 6th Fleet (2015), Commander Submarine Force for the U.S. Pacific Fleet (2017), and Vice Director of Strategy, Plans and Policy for the Joint Staff (2019). In late 2019, Caudle was named Commander, Submarine Forces and promoted to Vice Admiral (3 Star).

Caudle and his wife, Donna, live in Norfolk, Va., and have two daughters, two stepdaughters, and one grandson.

ANA PIQUERAS DAVIS

Ana Davis earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1991. She started her career with ExxonMobil as a Process Control Engineer at their refinery in Baytown, Texas. She then changed industries, taking the opportunity to be a Facilities Engineer in a computer chip manufacturing plant at Advanced Micro Devices in Austin, Texas.

In 2001, Davis again changed industries, becoming the Environment, Health and Safety Leader at Union Carbide’s large chemical site in Institute, WVa. One year later, she became Production Leader for Water Soluble Polymers. Davis transferred to Freeport, Texas, in 2004 as a Production Leader for Epoxy and Intermediates after Dow Chemical had purchased Union Carbide.

Davis found her way back to North Carolina in 2005 as a Custom Processing Manufacturing Manager job at Kao Specialties in High Point, NC. Finally, she took a job with Syngenta in 2011 as Manager of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in Greensboro, where she later was named Head of Health, Safety and Environment for the North American Crop Protection and Seeds Business. In this job she has responsibility for sites across the US and Canada and is a member of the Global HSE Leadership team.

Davis is married to John Davis, also a chemical engineering alumnus of NC State. They have two daughters and a son and live in Jamestown, NC.

MARCUS L. MARTIN SR.

Marcus Martin, Sr. completed a dual major at NC State receiving a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1971 and a B.S. in Pulp and Paper Technology in 1970. Upon graduation he was hired as a Production Engineer at Westvaco in Covington, VA.

Two years later, Martin was accepted into the inaugural class at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where in 1976 he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree. He headed to New Mexico to work at the Gallup Indian Medical Center as a Lieutenant with the US Public Health Service. Martin then was accepted into Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Cincinnati finishing in 1981. His experience in emergency medicine led him to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA where he became Residency Director and Interim Chair of the Emergency Medicine.

In 1996 Martin went to the University of Virginia as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. He joined the Office for Diversity and Equity at the University of Virginia in 2006 and three years later was named Vice President and Chief Officer for Diversity and Equity. In this role he delivered the final report of the President’s Commission on Slavery and the University. The endowed Marcus L. Martin Distinguished Professorship of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia was established in December 2016.

Martin and his wife, Donna, live in Corolla, NC and have two sons and two daughters, and five grandchildren.

Ronnie is a member of the UNC-Wilmington Cameron School of Business Executive Advisory Board and the Wilmington Investor Network, an Angle investing group. He recently completed serving a term as Chairman of the UNC-Wilmington Board of Trustees.

CHRISTOPHER R. SHAUL

Chris Shaul, a native of Cumberland County, earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 2005 and completed an MBA at the University at Buffalo in 2010. He started his career as a Process Engineer at the DuPont Yerkes Plant in Buffalo, NY, working on Tedlar polyvinyl fluoride film used in solar panels. Just three years later, in 2008, Shaul was promoted to Process Supervisor.

In 2011, Shaul transferred to the DuPont plant in Circleville, Ohio, taking a Manufacturing Technology Supervisor role. This site produces Tedlar polyvinyl fluoride film and Kapton polyimide film that is used in a wide variety of applications such as insulating cell phone batteries. In 2014, he was promoted to Operations Area Manager.

Shaul transferred to the DuPont plant in Dayton, Ohio, in 2016 as Operations Manager. This site produces electronic grade polymers for lithographic applications many of which are based on acetoxystyrene monomer. Shaul was named Plant Manager for the Dayton site in 2018.

Shaul is married to the former Katherine Schadel, also an alumna of NC State, and they live in Springboro, Ohio.

MILTON G. WILLIAMS JR.

Milt Williams, a Kinston, NC, native, earned two chemical engineering degrees at NC State: a B.S. in 1961 and a Ph.D. four years later in 1965. He started his career as an R&D Engineer at Fiber Industries Inc. in Charlotte, NC, working in the Fiber Physics Group. He then worked in R&D groups supporting polyester nonwovens and staple fiber products. In addition, he supported polyester filament yarn processes at the Shelby, NC, manufacturing plant.

In 1973, Williams transferred to Fiber Industries’ Greenville, SC, manufacturing plant, a site that produced polyester filament yarn. He took on his first leadership role as Process Development Group Leader. He then took on higher level leadership positions at the Greenville plant as Manufacturing Area Superintendent and Quality Assurance Superintendent.

Williams had the opportunity to go to Freudenberg Performance Materials in 1982, a global manufacturer of technical textiles, in Durham, NC. There he served in a number of high-level leadership roles such as Assistant Plant Manager, Director of Research and Development and Vice President and Technical Director.

Williams and his wife, Martha, live in Columbia, SC. They have two daughters, six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
