Professors Cathy Fromen and Milad Abolhasani Receive AIChE 35 Under 35 Awards

Professors Cathy Fromen and Milad Abolhasani are members of the 2020 class of AIChE 35 Under 35 Award winners.

Per the award announcement, “The AIChE 35 Under 35 Award was founded to recognize young chemical engineers who have achieved greatness in their fields. The winners are a group of driven, engaged, and socially active professionals, representing the breadth and diversity that chemical engineering exemplifies.”

Alum Prof. Fromen (Ph.D. ’14) is an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Delaware. She completed her B.S. degree in chemical engineering at the University of Rochester and her doctorate degree in our department. Prior to joining the faculty at Delaware she performed postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan as a University of Michigan’s President’s Postdoctoral Fellow.

Her research group focuses on applying chemical engineering principles to pulmonary drug delivery. Major research efforts in the group involve designing therapeutic pulmonary aerosols for immune engineering and creating 3D-printed lung replicas to advance in vitro deposition testing.

Prof. Fromen has authored over 25 manuscripts and patents, including notable peer-reviewed works in PNAS, ACS Nano, Chem Mater, and ACS Biomaterials Sci & Engineering. Her work has been recognized with recent awards, including selection as an Inaugural Early Career Board Member to ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering, and the 2020 PhRMA Foundation Research Starter Award.

Professor Milad Abolhasani
Prof. Milad Abolhasani

Prof. Abolhasani received his B.S. and M.A.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology and the University of British Columbia, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining CBE, he was a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT.

He leads a diverse research group that studies flow chemistry strategies tailored toward accelerated development and manufacturing of materials. To meet these goals, his research group studies fundamentals of process intensification and microscale transport phenomena using microreaction engineering concepts and principles of smart manufacturing.

Prof. Abolhasani has received numerous awards and fellowships including NSF CAREER Award, ACS-PRF Doctoral New Investigator Award, AIChE Futures, and Emerging Investigator recognitions from the journals Lab on a Chip, Reaction Chemistry & Engineering, and Journal of Flow Chemistry.

Congratulations to Professors Fromen and Abolhasani for these recognitions of your excellent career accomplishments!
