With rapid increase of electronic devices that\u00a0have decreasing lifetime in use, three important issues have emerged: (1) a huge amount of waste\u00a0from used electronics, (2) rapid consumption of scarce elements to manufacture new electronic\u00a0devices to keep up with the demand, and (3) the enormous energy consumed to manufacture\u00a0these electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">My current research focuses on the development of major components of soft electronics such as\u00a0substrate and dielectric material, using biodegradable and environmentally benign materials. One\u00a0goal is to develop thin film substrates that can replace the existing synthetic, non-biodegradable\u00a0fossil fuel based films. Substrates produced using different techniques will be evaluated for\u00a0enhanced optical properties, thermal stability, and tensile and bending properties which are\u00a0relevant to the operation and stability of soft electronic devices. Experiments will also be\u00a0designed to fabricate soft and stretchable thin film substrates that can mimic the tensile stress-\u00a0strain properties of human skin for applications in wearable devices. Another goal is to develop\u00a0biopolymer based dielectric material with high dielectric constant.
