AIChE Annual Student Conference 2024 Round-up

This year’s national conference highlighted many of our students’ outstanding achievements, which the chapter should be extremely proud of.  Many congratulations!

National Student Poster Competition Winners
Eight NC State students entered the poster competition. All represented the chapter and department extremely well!

Received awards:

  • Anastasiia Steksova – 2nd place Food, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnology IX; Utilizing Supercoiled Plasmids in CRISPR-Dx for Viral Gene Detection; advised by Dr. Qingshan Wei
  • Rex Collard – 3rd place Materials Science VI; The Future of Monovalent Energy Storage: EGaIn & Red P; advised by Dr. Michael Dickey and Dr. Peter Fedkiw

  • Cade Harrington Novel Polymeric Morphologies As Positive Electrodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries; advised by Dr. Orlin Velev and Dr. Peter Fedkiw
  • Victoria Sagne Directed Evolution of Oxidized Monoterpene Biosensors; advised by Dr. Gavin Williams (Dept of Chemistry)

National Scholarship Awardees

  • Ryan Sedlacek – Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship; Ryan was recognized for his academic achievement and involvement in chapter during the Student Awards Ceremony.  Approximately 15 scholarships are awarded annually.
  • Rex Collard – John J. McKetta Scholarship; Rex was recognized for his academic achievement and involvement in the chapter during the Student Awards Ceremony.  Only one scholarship is given nationally to a member planning a career in the chemical engineering process industries.

Nationally Recognized Members

  • Mohammed Naseeb – Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award; Mohammed was recognized at the Freshman/Sophomore Awards Ceremony as well as the Student Awards Ceremony.  This award recognizes the sophomore member with the highest GPA. Mohammed was recognized in absentia.
  • Krys Woodruff – Freshman Recognition Award; Krys was recognized at the Freshman/Sophomore Awards Ceremony as well as the Student Awards Ceremony. This award recognizes an active freshman member.

The student chapter received recognition as a 2023-2024 National Outstanding Chapter during the Student Awards Ceremony.

Lastly, shout-out to Ryan Sedlacek for his hard work organizing travel to the conference. Ryan worked through the summer and over several weeks in the fall to secure EYE funding and organize travel to/from San Diego as well as accommodations for everyone.
