Professor Christine S. Grant was recently honored with two national awards…

First, she received the 2019 William W. Grimes Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering from the AIChE Minority Affairs Committee. The Committee promotes activities that encourage the education and training of minorities in engineering and related disciplines.

Dr. Grimes was the first African-American Fellow of the AIChE. The award recognizes a chemical engineer’s outstanding achievements in the chemical engineering profession and as a distinguished role model for minorities.

Second, she received the 2019 Dr. Joseph N. Cannon Award for Excellence in Chemical Engineering from the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE). NOBCChE is a professional organization dedicated to assisting African American and other minority students and professionals in fully realizing their potential in all aspects of their professional lives in chemistry, chemical engineering and allied fields.

The Cannon Award recognizes an individual for excellent achievement in one or more aspects of chemical engineering. Dr. Cannon, a professor and former department head of chemical engineering at Howard University, is one of the seven NOBCChE founders. Cannon is a longtime colleague of Prof. Grant and a mentor who encouraged her as a graduate student.

Professor Grant is a Fellow of the AIChE and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Faculty Advancement in the NCSU College of Engineering.  She has been a member of the faculty of the NC State Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering department for 30 years. Her accomplishments as an educator, leader and mentor have been recognized by achievement awards from the AAAS, ACS, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Council for Chemical Research, among others.

The impact of Prof. Grant’s efforts to help Dean Louis Martin-Vega fulfill his commitment to increase the numbers of Engineering tenured and tenure-track women faculty members are highlighted in the Fall/Winter Issue of the NC State Engineering magazine. Her status as a Dean’s Circle donor is also highlighted.

Congratulations to Professor Grant for these well-deserved awards!
